Swiss Super League market values: Ugrinic on the rise, Young Boys increase squad value by 3%
Transfermarkt has now completed its latest market value update of the Swiss Super League and there is no doubt that BSC Young Boys are the main winners. Filip Ugrinic, Meschack Elia and Cedric Itten can all look forward to a hefty increase. The reigning Swiss champions and cup winners have underpinned their status as the club with the highest squad value - the club from Bern now have an overall squad market value of €58.3 million. Which constitutes a 3.3% increase and now almost twice the value of second placed FC Basel.
The most valuable player in the league remains Lugano midfielder Ardon Jashari despite a drop from €7.5m to €6.5m. The 21-year old has five goals in 14 games, which is quite convincing for a defensive midfielder. Oliver Zesiger, area manager for Switzerland at Transfermarkt, explains why the player's value was downgraded: "Jashari flirted with a move to FC Basel in the summer. This not only cost him the captain's armband, but also a few games. In addition, he was partly responsible for conceding goals against Hibernian on the international stage and lost his place in the Swiss national team. In the meantime, he is a regular player again, but the drama from the summer is still reverberating."
The most valuable players in the Swiss Super League
In stark contrast, Young Boys midfielder Ugrinic has since made himself indispensable for his club. So far this season the player has seven goals in 13 games across all competitions and as a result his market value has risen by €2.7m to €4m. "Ugrinic had a strong start to the new season, not only in the league,” said Zesiger. “The 24-year old also scored in the Champions League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa, paving the way to reach the group stages. He was also called up for the Swiss national team for the first time. All this was taken into account when Ugrinic's market value was increased."
Ugrinic's team-mate Elia also saw his market value rise from €5m to €6m and can now call himself the second most valuable player in the Super League. The attacker provided six goals and assists in 14 matches. "The Congo national player is convincing with his deep play,” notes Zesiger. “Elia adds a different dimension to Young Boys' attacks. He is also one of the fastest players in the league. In the Champions League, he also played a decisive role in YB's success with one goal and two assists.”
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
